Our Impact
“Follow your heart, become the superhero you were meant to be”
Jeffrey Hinton, U.S. Marine Corp (Ret)
U.S History Teacher, Clark County School District
My name is Dr. Jeffrey Allen Hinton, and I have taught US history in the Clark County School District for over twenty years. Before that, I served in the United States Marine Corps, 1990-1994, as an 0311 rifleman in the 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion. My military experience has been an invaluable part of my career development and has significantly contributed to my success as a public school teacher. The Marines taught me about commitment, perseverance in the face of adversity, and service to others, traits that have stayed with me as I transitioned from the Corps into the classroom. The Marine Corps motto is Semper Fidelis, and it means always faithful, faithful to corps, and faithful to country. Today, Semper Fidelis has an additional meaning for me: always faithful to students and their families. My service to my country did not end with my honorbale discharge, but continues as I help to better young lives by providing high-quality educational opportunities. President Ronald Reagan once famously quipped, “Some people wonder all their lives if they’ve made a difference. The Marines don’t have that problem.” I would also add that neither do teachers
James Brawley, U.S. Navy (Ret)
STEM Teacher,
Adobe Middle School
I really enjoyed my time in the Navy and the purpose it gave to my life. When I decided to get out of the military I didn't really know what I was going to do next. I did know I still wanted to serve others in some capacity. While transitioning I remember taking the Myer-Briggs Personality Test and it said teaching would fit my personality type. I'm glad it did because I enjoy teaching as much if not more than my time in the service. Teaching gives me the opportunity to serve and impact the students that will be our future.
Kane Swaney, U.S. Air Force (Ret)
Technology and Engineering Teacher,
Caesar Rodney High School
I would say people should try this program. They will help you in many different ways and our experience from the military helps us become excellent teachers. It really helps us once they see your work ethic and your dedication--it really makes you become a valued member in the department of education, as a whole.
